When most players buy a padel racket, they ask about the carbon.
Is it 3K or 12K?
18K or 24K?
Far fewer ask a question that can be just as important:
What foam is inside it?
Hidden beneath the face of your racket is an EVA core that plays a major role in how the racket responds when the ball makes contact.
It affects how readily the racket compresses, how lively or direct the response feels, how much impact you feel through your hand and arm, and how forgiving the racket can be.
And this is why carbon specifications alone never tell you the whole story.
The Face and Foam Work Together
Think about a padel racket as a complete system.
The outer face influences how the racket flexes and responds, while the EVA underneath it compresses and recovers during impact.
Change either one and you can change the character of the racket.
An 18K carbon face paired with soft EVA can feel very different from the same face paired with a considerably harder EVA core.
So asking whether 12K, 18K or 24K is “better” without considering the foam underneath it misses half the conversation.
Soft EVA
Soft EVA compresses relatively easily when the ball makes contact with the racket.
The result is generally a softer, more forgiving response with accessible ball output—particularly when the player is not swinging at maximum speed.
Soft EVA can offer:
- Easier rebound
- A softer impact sensation
- Greater comfort
- A more forgiving response
- Easier depth at lower swing speeds
- Less demanding play over longer sessions
Who might prefer it?
Soft EVA can be particularly useful for:
- Beginners
- Intermediate players
- Players with compact or moderate swings
- Defensive or touch-oriented players
- Players prioritising comfort
- Anyone who simply prefers a softer racket feel
But there is an important misconception here.
Soft does not mean beginner.
Experienced and high-level players can also prefer softer constructions when they already generate plenty of racket-head speed themselves and want additional feel, rebound or comfort.
Medium EVA
Medium EVA occupies the space between the accessible response of soft foam and the firmer character of hard EVA.
The foam does not deform as readily as a very soft core, but it is still forgiving enough to provide a versatile response across different types of shots.
For many players, this creates a useful middle ground between comfort and directness.
Who might prefer it?
Medium EVA can suit:
- Improving players
- Balanced all-court players
- Players with moderate swing speeds
- Players who want additional precision without moving to an extremely firm racket
- Players who regularly transition between defensive and attacking situations
There is a reason medium constructions can be so versatile: they do not sit at either extreme.
Hard EVA
Hard EVA requires greater force to deform significantly.
At slower impact speeds, that can make the racket feel firmer and less lively. But when a player generates substantial racket-head speed, the firmer construction can provide a stable, direct response.
Hard EVA is commonly associated with:
- A firmer impact sensation
- Less accessible rebound at lower speeds
- More direct feedback
- Greater demand on timing and technique
- A response suited to aggressive, high-speed striking
Who might prefer it?
Harder constructions can make sense for:
- Advanced players
- Competitive players
- Powerful attackers
- Players with high racket-head speed
- Aggressive overhead players
- Players who prefer a firm, direct response
But that brings us to one of the biggest misunderstandings surrounding racket hardness.
Does Harder Automatically Mean More Powerful?
No.
A harder racket does not automatically make every player hit harder.
The outcome depends on the interaction between the player, the foam, the racket face and the speed of impact.
At lower swing speeds, softer foam can provide more accessible rebound because it deforms more readily.
At higher impact speeds, a firmer core can provide the stability and response that a powerful player is looking for.
So instead of saying:
Hard foam means power.
A better way to think about it is:
Harder foam rewards a different kind of impact.
The fastest racket on paper is irrelevant if its construction does not work efficiently with the person swinging it.
Soft Foam Isn't Just for Beginners
This deserves repeating.
Choosing a softer racket does not mean you are an inexperienced player.
High-level players generate considerable speed themselves. Some therefore choose softer or medium-soft constructions because they value feel, ball output or comfort.

A player with a slower or moderate swing may find a soft EVA construction easier to use effectively.
A player generating very high racket-head speeds may prefer the firmer, more direct response of harder EVA.
Then there are all the variables around it: carbon construction, racket shape, balance, weight, hole pattern and internal structure.
